Project Category: Streaming / Digital Media / Social Media
About: Basic Income Works is a socio-economic focused project that explores the impacts of guaranteed income. In this series, I participate in a UBI program and share my experience, the experience of other participants, and explore important questions about basic income along the way through research-backed, fact-checked sources.
Position: Host, Producer, Editor
I self-taped and recorded each hosted segment for this YouTube series, story produced the original script written by the project manager, and edited the videos using host footage, submitted footage from other participants, stock footage, music, and some color correction. I also created very basic graphics to help the audience keep track of the information. The series released in 2023, and by year-end had over 10k organic views.
Production Secret: Better done than perfect.
I don't usually apply this mantra to my work, but this project was an exception. Due to the limited funding available, I volunteered my time to create this series and other social media projects for the program while also participating in it as a recipient. That meant I wasn't being compensated by the hour, or week, and I was balancing this project with more full-on producing roles. So, it became a weekends/whenever I have time project. The most important thing was: get the information out there. It doesn't have to be cinematic, with perfect audio, and incredible stock footage. It needs to be practical: does it make sense? is it easy to follow? With a series like this, it's actually helpful to be more "user generated" so that it stays relatable. Is it perfect? Not by industry standards. Is it done? Yes, and it's out there for anyone who needs more research-backed, fact-checked information on this topic. And to us, that's what mattered most.
