Episode - NonGirly: Jennifer Brindley on Storm Chasing

Project Category: Digital Media / Short-form / Social Media

About: Nongirly is a not-for-profit organisation focused on supporting and inspiring girls and young women as they move through the challenges of school and society. For this series, NonGirly featured women in male-dominated fields with the intention of demystifying these professions and opening the doors for the next generation of the female workforce.

Position: Editor
As the editor, I was given self-taped footage of a journalist/producer interviewing a featured professional remotely. From there, I would make story cuts and send them to the client for approval. Once approved, I moved into the fine cut stage for color, archival, stock footage/images, and music. I also created basic lower thirds and graphics for the videos.

Production Secret: A/V Club
When it comes to self taped interviews (a.k.a. recorded Zooms), I'll take good audio over video any day. Getting footage remotely can be challenging, and few people have a solid camera and mic to work with. What most people do have, however, is a great smartphone. I always make sure the interviewee has their smartphone recording audio before we start the remote interview, and that it is placed closer to them than the camera (which is usually in their computer, or placed above as a web-cam), with the mic facing them and hopefully close to the same height as their mouth. When I synch this audio with the native computer audio, it almost always wins - improving the overall production value and, in turn, watchability of the video as a whole.
